Becks Driving School

My name is Becks and I am a female driving instructor based in Nottingham, offering cheap driving lessons to people of all abilities and ages. I teach lessons on a one to one basis in order to build your confidence, give you the skills to become a great driver and above all, pass with pride.

Practical Driving Test

The practical driving test lasts for approximately 40 minutes. During this test you will be asked to answer one 'show me' and one 'tell me' question (see further down this page). After the 'show me, tell me' questions are answered your driving ability will be tested. You should drive as you have been taught by your instructor.

Whilst on the test you will be asked to perform one of 3 possible manoeuvres, reversing around a corner, turning in the road and reverse parking. You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop.

Independent driving is now also part of the practical driving test. This will mean that for approximately 10 minutes of your test you will be asked to drive following a series of directions or traffic signs or both. This section is not intended to assess your ability to follow directions, it is there to assess your ability to make good decisions in a safe manner.

You can have up to 15 minor marks on your practical driving test, 16 will result in a fail. One major will result in a fail.

Show Me Tell Me

The 'show me, tell me' section of the test is designed to show that you have a basic understanding of the vehicle. People are often nervous about the show me tell me section of the practical test as they have no knowledge of anything under the bonnet. If you look on the picture below you can see that there are many things that are yellow in colour, each of these things are part of the show me tell me part of the practical test.

Failure to provide the correct response to one or both of the questions will result in one minor mark.

Q) "Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working?"

A) Turn on Lights (turn ignition on if necessary, walk around car and check the lights are on).

Q) Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car? (I can assist you, if you need to switch the ignition on, please do not start the engine).

A) Activate the brake pedal and make use of the reflections in garage doors etc to see if the brake lights come on. Alternatively ask someone to help.
